International A series paper & United States Paper Sizes Explained

International paper sizes, also known as the A series, are widely used in many countries around the world, except for the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The A series is based on the international standard ISO 216 and includes sizes such as A4, A3, A2, A1, and A0. The most commonly used size is A4.

Here are the dimensions of the A series in millimetres:

  • A0: 841 x 1189 mm
  • A1: 594 x 841 mm
  • A2: 420 x 594 mm
  • A3: 297 x 420 mm
  • A4: 210 x 297 mm
  • A5: 148 x 210 mm
  • A6: 105 x 148 mm
  • A7: 74 x 105 mm
  • A8: 52 x 74 mm

In contrast, the United States and Canada typically use a different system of paper sizes, known as the American paper size or ANSI paper size. The most common size in this system is the Letter size.

Here are the dimensions of some common American paper sizes in inches:

  • Letter: 8.5 x 11 inches
  • Legal: 8.5 x 14 inches
  • Tabloid (or Ledger): 11 x 17 inches

Below Are Common Art Sizes

  • 5 x 7 inches
  • 8 x 10 inches
  • 11 x 14 inches
  • 16 x 20 inches
  • 24 x 30 inches

It's important to note that these sizes are not interchangeable due to the differences in dimensions. If you're working with documents that will be used internationally, it's advisable to be aware of both systems and choose the appropriate paper size for the intended audience. Additionally, the A series is based on a consistent aspect ratio, where each size is half the area of the one before it. This allows for easy scaling between sizes.

In short if you are purchasing an art print for a frame The American sizes are slightly more squarer than the more recognised International sizes which are more rectangular.

Hope this helps.
